St Stephen, protomartyr, died c AD34, as described in Acts 7. Traditionally venerated as the Protomartyr or first martyr of Christianity. Stephen was a deacon in the early church at Jerusalem.
The series of Historiated Initials is based on illustrations from manuscripts, and depicts a range of different saints and scenes from the Bible. Many of the initials are highlighted with 24 carat gold leaf.
Stephen is painted in acrylic on a Loxley Gold box canvas and has two layers of varnish. It has 24 carat gold highlighting. It is signed on the reverse in pencil. All edges are painted and varnished.
