St. Peter the Apostle, original name Simeon or Simon, died 64 AD in Rome. Recognized in the early Christian church as the leader of the 12 disciples and by the Roman Catholic Church as the first of its succession of popes.

The series of Historiated Initials is based on illustrations from manuscripts, and depicts a range of different saints and scenes from the Bible. Many of the initials are highlighted with 24 carat gold leaf.

St Peter is painted in acrylic on a Loxley Gold box canvas and has two layers of varnish. It includes 24 carat gold highlights. It is signed on the reverse in pencil. All edges are painted and varnished.

This is one of a series of historiated initial paintings.
