St Laurence was one of the seven deacons of Rome who were martyred with Pope Sixtus II in the persecution ordered by Valerian ordered in 258.
The series of Historiated Initials is based on illustrations from manuscripts, and depicts a range of different saints and scenes from the Bible. Many of the initials are highlighted with 24 carat gold leaf.
St Laurence is painted in acrylic on a Loxley Gold box canvas and has two layers of varnish. It is signed on the reverse in pencil. All edges are painted and varnished.
This is one of a series of historiated initial paintings.
