Rufillus; a monk who included a self portrait in the manuscript he was creating in Weissenau Abbey in Ravensburg, Germany, near the end of the 12th century. 

The series of Historiated Initials is based on illustrations from manuscripts, and depicts a range of different saints and scenes from the Bible. Many of the initials are highlighted with 24 carat gold leaf.

Rufillus is painted in acrylic on a Loxley Gold box canvas and has two layers of varnish. It is signed on the reverse in pencil. All edges are painted and varnished.

This is one of a series of historiated initial paintings.

The image size is 20cm x 25cm (8" x 10").
