Sempiternal Roses (sb)

Sempiternal Roses (sb)

This painting is based on a woodcut by Gustave Dore to illustrate Dante's Divine Comedy. This is from Paradise X!!, 19 - 21; showing the twin circles of Love and learning echoing St Francis and St Dominic, and the unity between holy orders. ‘In such wise of those sempiternal roses/The garlands twain encompassed us about, / And thus the outer to the inner answered.’

This image is painted in acrylic on a Loxley Gold box canvas and has two layers of varnish. All edges are painted and varnished and it is signed on the reverse in pencil. The image size is 10cm x 15cm (4" x 6").

This is one of a series of paintings that I have created on this theme.
