Icon of Olaudah Equiano, (Gustavus Vassa), a freed Igbo slave from the eastern part of present-day Nigeria. Equiano was part of an abolitionist group composed of prominent Africans living in Britain, and was active among leaders of the anti-slave trade movement in the 1780s
The series of British saints attests to over a thousand years of Christian witness in the British Isles. Subjects range from Saint David of Wales to Cuthbert, William Wilberforce to Evelyn Underhill.
Equiano is painted in acrylic on a Loxley Gold box canvas and has two layers of varnish. It is signed on the reverse in pencil. All edges are painted and varnished.
This is one of a series of saints of the British Isles; see my shop for other images.
